Might suck. Might not.

First I’ve heard of an impending feature length Horton Hears a Who. The images up so far look quite Seussian for being CG, and it has Chris Wedge and Audrey Geisel on board, so I dunno. This goes on the ‘wait and see’ pile. One of the directors was an animator for “ReBoot” (still a personal favorite from Saturday morning), as well as both “Toy Story”s and “Monsters Inc”. The other’s previous directorial work was on a video game: specifically, on ‘Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail’. So maybe. If it’s not slyly subversive, it’s not really Seuss. Fingers (toes, eyes, pseudopodia) crossed.

Nope, sorry. It’s going to suck huge reams of red-tasselled suckiness for the exact same reason that Ron Howard/Jim Carrey’s Grinch did.

YOU CANNOT PAD A FIFTY-PAGE CHILDREN’S BOOK, ONE THAT CHUCK JONES HAD TO ADD SONGS TO TO EXTEND TO TWENTY-TWO MINUTES, TO AN HOUR AND A HALF.

All these jerks are seeing is a popular thing they can license. It’s even possible they’ll make money on it. But, good? Feh.

Well, that’s sure possible. And Carrey’s on board as a voice, which sends up little red flags all over my brain. But … well, I’m more inclined to wait and see. It looks like no one other than Carrey that was on Grinch is involved here, the CG looks pretty good (so far… haven’t seen anything move yet), and that’s at least a step in the right direction.

Like Chuck Jones’ Grinch, it’s what they pad it with that counts. The trick is that it has to be Seussian. While that’s an easy style to mimic, it’s a hard one to emulate.

Still, you’d think that stories like this would inspire the animation houses to go back into producing shorts like the classic WB/MGM cartoons rather than throw buckets of money and hours of time into a risky venture like a full-length feature. I mean, damn. Who among us wouldn’t rather see a cartoon ahead of a movie rather than fifteen minutes of TV commercials blown up to the big screen?
