Jerry Ford, farewell.
Farewell to a genuinely nice guy, a man of moderation, down to earth and unpretentious. The world could do well with more Republicans like the late Gerald R. Ford. Sure, I wanted to see him lose the ’76 election, but mainly because of The Pardon, which had the appearance of being a quid pro quo, whether there was one or not.
Jerry Ford was a classic Midwestern conservative, a man with whom I could honorably disagree and yet be content that while he might not do what I would think best, he would at least do no harm. And unusually for a politician, he had a self-effacing sense of humor: some of us are old enough to remember his taped appearance on Saturday Night Live.
Rest well, sir. If there’s an afterlife, I expect Bob Hope has your tee time already scheduled.
