Hats off…

…for William F. Buckley, an opponent with wit, charm and style. If more Conservatives were like him, it would be a lot less sociopathic over on that side of the aisle.

Bullshit, complete and utter bullshit!!!! The whole nature of the conservative philosophy as expounded by Hobbes is that humanity starts depraved and must be reigned in. The greedy conservative bastards are by nature sociopathic and revel in it. They try to hide it as Bush did with his whole compassionate conservative crap. They are bred as sociopaths, and therefore will not change, unless like Arriana Huffington they see that compassion they have an awakening of conscientious which is extremely unlikely.

It sounds like an Audacity of Hope on your part to think conservatives would or could change. As a friend I ask you not be misled.

Buckley — certainly more than the current neocon crowd which has largely disowned him as their forefather — understood his political philosophy in terms of the larger scheme. Because he didn’t believe in government intrusion, Buckley was pro-legalization of marijuana, for instance.

Obviously, I believed he was frequently wrong on the issues. Unlike the neocons, I never believed he was evil.

Which part of the wit, charm, and style was present, when he threatened to beat the shit out of Gore Vidal, I wonder…

      I don’t recall that exchange…

Found it, right here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=li73RRLEyW8 — one bad slip in an otherwise erudite career. Frankly, a damn sight better record than any other conservative/neocon commentator that I can think of. I’ve also seen him repeatedly on Firing Line giving a Liberal guest his or her full say before responding, disagreeing strongly, vehemently, but never disagreeably.

Holding hostage his reputation for one hot-headed remark in 1968 after being called a Nazi on live TV is no fairer than holding hostage Clinton’s for smoking pot in the same year. I would much rather see another Bill Buckley than another Rush Limbaugh or Bill O’Reilly.
